Ena (left), with her sister Peggy
Aunt of
W.P. 'Bill' Richardson
Georgena was the seventh child
and fourth daughter of William Pallister Richardson and
his wife Esther ( nee Howey).
Though the spelling of her name was slightly
different, she was named for both her older sister
Georgina (who had died soon after being born in 1899)
and her maternal Grandmother, Georgiana.
Known as Ena, she was born on the 9th of February
1904 and her birth was registered in the Chester le
Street registration district.
She was baptised on 28th February 1904 and her
baptism was recorded in the Primitive Methodist Register
for Jarrow Circuit. That record stated that the family
lived at 29 Railway Terrace, Usworth Colliery and that
Georgena's Dad worked as a miner.
The family were recorded on the 1911 census at 2
Manor View, New Washington. Georgena was 7 and as well
as her older sister May (8) she had two younger sisters
Esther (4) and Margaret (2). The girls also had a new
baby brother, William P. who was just three weeks old.
Their father, William P., was 38 and worked as a hewer
in the pit and their mother Esther was 35.
She attended Washington Station Road Council School
and in their log books for 1915, when she was 11 I found
an entry by the headmaster saying:
July 9th Ena Richardson has got a County Junior
Scholarship.
Ena was a Domestic Science teacher when she grew up.
Georgena did not marry.
Near the end of her life she was living at 24 Chilton
Garth, Peterlee.
She died on the 1st of July 1971, aged 67 and her
death was registered in the Durham E registration
district. Her funeral was arranged by her sister May and
her cremation took place on the 7th July 1971 at
Sunderland Crematorium, she is remembered in the Book of
Remembrance.
