 Hugh was born in the second quarter of 1880 at Whitelee, Crook and Billy Row, Co. Durham the last child of David Gilliland and his wife Elizabeth (nee McCollough).

He was baptised at Stanley Parish Church on 25th March 1877, the record shows that his father worked as a miner and the family lived at White Lea Square.

The 1881 census recorded him aged one, living in the family home at Grahamsley, Crook and Billy Row with his parents and seven brothers and sisters.

In the 1891 census the record shows that Hugh was eleven years old and lists him as a scholar.

Hugh died on 30th December 1893 at Sunniside, he was just 13 years and 10 months old.

He was buried on 1st January 1894 at St. Thomas' churchyard, Stanley, Co. Durham.
