Great Uncle of
W.P. 'Bill' Richardson
The second child of Matthew Lee, a coal miner, and his wife Catherine
(nee Walton), John was born at Crook in the second
quarter of 1863.
He was recorded on the 1871 census, as a scholar aged
7 at Sunniside, Crook & Billy Row, Co. Durham along with
his parents, older sister Mary and two younger brothers
Thomas and Matthew.
The 1881 census recorded the family living in
Gladstone Terrace, Crook and Billy Row. John was 17 and
working as a coal miner. In addition to the brothers and
sister that were on the previous census, he now had two
other younger sisters, Sarah and Ada Isabel.
In the 1891 census, John was not listed as being in
the family home. I have searched the census data but can
find no definite record of him.
By the time of the 1901 census, John was 37 working
as a coal miner (hewer) and living with his widowed
mother Catherine and his sister Sarah at number
63, Gladstone Street, Crook.
The 1911 census recorded John living with his Mam and
sister Sarah at 19 Gladstone Street, Crook, Co. Durham.
He was 48 years old, single and worked as a coal miner
(hewer) at Peases Colliery.
I do not yet have a record of John's death. |
