Daughter of  W.P. 'Bill'
                        Richardson's Great Uncle, Thomas Richardson
                          Margaret was born
on 16th March 1893, she was the third child of
Thomas Richardson and his wife Mary Eleanor (nee Purvis)
and her birth was registered in the Chester le Street
                        Registration District. She was baptised
on 13th April 1893 and her baptism was recorded in the
Primitive Methodist Register for the Jarrow Circuit. The
family lived at Speculation Place, New Washington and
Margaret's Dad was a coal miner. The census of 1901
recorded her, aged 8, with her family at 6 Cooperative
Terrace, Usworth. Her Dad was 32 and worked as a
checkweighman at the colliery. Her Mam was also 32.
Margaret had two sisters: Annie (9) and Florence (3), she
also had a baby brother, John Morley, who was 4 months
old. By the time of the 1911 census
Margaret's father, Thomas, was a Member of Parliament
for Whitehaven. He was not listed in the family home as
he was away in Cumbria. The family were at home in 38
Cooperative Terrace, Usworth. Mam, Mary Eleanor, was 42, Margaret was 18, she worked as a typist. Her sister
Annie was 19 and she worked as an elementary school
teacher, Florence (13) and John Morley (10) were at
school. The newer members of the family were Thomas H.
                        (5) and Robert M. (5 months). Margaret's
father was not re-elected in the 1918 election and he
took the family to Canada. They sailed on the Minnedosa
on 9th April 1919. Margaret's sister, Annie, did not
accompany them but the rest of the family went. Margaret
returned to England within a year of their arrival and I
have found a 'possible' entry for her on an incoming
passenger list for October 1920, listed as a 27 year old
stenographer coming to England from Canada.
Margaret died in November 1923, she was 30 years old.
Her death was registered in the Lambeth Registration
District. She was buried at Streatham Vale Cemetery on
22nd November 1923 and the grave record shows that her
brother in law Alan Holmes (husband of sister Annie)
made the arrangements for the funeral. |
