W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Uncle, Thomas Richardson
John Morley was born on 3rd November 1900,
he was the sixth child of Thomas Richardson and his
wife Mary Eleanor (nee Purvis) and his birth was registered
in the Chester le Street Registration District.
His baptism was recorded in the Primitive Methodist
Register for Jarrow Circuit. The record says he was
baptised on 28th November 1900, the family lived at 6
Cooperative Terrace, New Washington and John's Dad
worked as a checkweighman.
He was recorded on the census of 1901, aged 4 months,
with his family at 6 Cooperative Terrace, Usworth. His
father was 32 and worked as a Checkweighman at the
colliery, his mother was also 32. John had three older
sisters, Annie (9), Margaret (8) and Florence (3).
The census of 1911 recorded the family at 38 Cooperative
Terrace, so they had moved house, but not very far!
John's Dad was a Member of Parliament and not listed in
the household as he was away on the night the census was
taken. The family members in the house were Mam, Mary
Eleanor (42), Annie (19) who worked as a teacher,
Margaret (18) who was a typist, Florence (13), John (10)
and Thomas (5) were all at school and the baby was
Robert who was 5 months old. In 1919,
John's father moved the family to Canada. The ship's
passenger manifesto lists his father and mother, sisters
Margaret and Florence as well as John, Thomas and
Robert. Though most of the family
subsequently returned to England, John and his brother
Thomas stayed and made their lives in Canada. John was a
lawyer and also very involved in the running of the
Soccer Association in British Columbia.
On 25th June 1924, John married Winifred Frewin in
Vancouver. They had two children Ron Lyle
Richardson and Joan Richardson. John died on 5th October
1952 in Vancouver, he was 51 years old. His obituary was
published in the Vancouver Sun on Monday 6th October
1952. |
