Son of
W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Uncle, Thomas Richardson
Robert McDonald
Richardson was the tenth (and as far as I know, the
last) child of Thomas Richardson and his wife Mary
Eleanor (nee Purvis). He was born on 22nd October 1910 and his birth was registered in the Chester le
Street Registration District. Robert was
baptised on 21st November 1910 and his baptism was
recorded in the Primitive Methodist Register for Jarrow
Circuit. The family lived at 38 Cooperative Terrace, New
Washington and his Dad worked as a Check-Weighman at the
colliery. The census
of 1911 recorded him, aged 5 months, in the family home
at 38 Cooperative Terrace, Usworth. His Mam was 42, his
Dad was also 42 but was away from home on the night of
the census so was counted elsewhere.
Robert had three sisters Annie (19) who was a teacher, Margaret (18) who
was a typist and Florence (13) who was at school. His
two brothers were John M (10) and Thomas H (5), they too
were both at school. On the 9th of April
1919, the family emigrated to Canada. They were on the
Minnedosa bound for New Brunswick and then travelled
onward to live in Vancouver. Robert was 9, it must have
been a big adventure for him.
Life in Canada did not work out the way his father hoped
and on the 13th May 1924, Robert and his Mam and Dad
returned to England. In the third
quarter of 1935, Robert married Emma Eliza Oatley. Their
marriage was registered in the Surrey Mid E Registration
District, they were both 25 years old.
Robert and Emma had four children, Malcolm ( born
1937), Colin (born 1939), and twins Barry and Wendy (born 1948).
Robert died on 11th April
1967 at Ashford hospital, Stanwell, he was 56 years old.
His address at the time of his death was 619 Bath Road,
Longford and his occupation was given as Grocer. His
death was registered by his son, Colin.
Robert's wife, Emma, who was born on 29th October 1910
on the Isle of Wight, lived much longer. She died on
22nd October 2009, a week before her 99th
birthday.
