John was born on
27th May 1900. His parents were Leinan
Gaunt and his wife Isabella (nee Richardson) and his
birth was registered in the Chester le Street
Registration District. His baptism was
recorded in the Primitive Methodist Register for Jarrow
Circuit. The record says he was baptised on 13th June
1900, the family lived at Cooperative Freehold, New
Washington and John's Dad worked as a miner. He was counted in
the census of 1901, at 1 Cooperative Freehold, Usworth
aged just 10 months. His Dad, Leinan, was 29 and working
as a hewer in the pit, his Mam, Isabella was 31. John
had an older sister Margaret, who was 4.
By the time of the 1911 census, the family were living
at 8 Richardson Terrace, New Washington. John was 10 and
attended school. As well as his older sister Margaret (14) he had two younger sisters. Annie was 7 and Ada was
1. His Dad still worked as a hewer and was 39, his Mam
was 41. In the third quarter of 1924,
John married Mary Newton, their marriage was registered
in the Newcastle on Tyne Registration District. They had
at least one child, Beryl N Gaunt, born in 1927.
From the family, we learned that he was a brilliant
carpenter and also that he was a breeder of wire-haired
fox terriers.
He died on 26th March 1958, aged 57, at the family home
5 Egremont Drive, Gateshead. His occupation was given as
an occupational therapist. He was cremated at West Road
Crematorium, Newcastle on 29th March 1958.
His wife Mary died on 21st December 1959 and was
cremated at West Road on 23rd December. |
