Husband of  W.P. 'Bill'
Richardson's Great Aunt, Isabella Pallister Richardson

                          Leinan was born in
Newcastle on Tyne in the last quarter of 1871.  He
was the son of John Gaunt (a cordwainer and shoe
maker) and his wife Jane (nee Mantle).  John and Jane were both
                        originally from Huntingdonshire. On the
1881 census the family were recorded living at 19
Hamsterley Rd, Elswick, Newcastle. Leinan was 9 years
old and listed as a scholar. His father, John, was 46 and
working as a shoemaker, his mother, Jane, was 44, they
had five other children Charles (13), Richard (11), Lily
(7), Ada (4) and Lucetta who was the baby at 6 months
old. They seemed to have moved around a fair bit, of the
six children, one had been born in Leicester, four in
Newcastle and one in Gateshead. By the
time of the 1891 census, the family had moved again,
this time back to Huntingdonshire and they were living
in Bythorn. Leinan's father, John, was listed as an
'army shoemaker' as were Leinan and his brother Charles.
The only children listed were  Charles, Leinan, Ada
and Lucetta. They must have travelled
north again, as in 1894 Leinan married Isabella
Palllister Richardson  when he was 22 and she was
24 and their marriage was registered in the Chester le
                        Street Registration District. The 1901
census showed Leinan (29) and Isabella (31) living at
number 1 Co-operative Freeholds, in Usworth. They had
two children Maggie (4) and John (10 months). Leinan was
no longer working as a shoemaker, but was a hewer in the
pit. The 1911 census recorded Leinan and
Isabella at 8 Richardson Terrace, New Washington. They  had four
children. Maggie was 14, John was 10, Annie was 7 and Ada was just
one month old. Leinan was 39 and his wife, Isabella was
                        41. There was also a girl called Annie Jorden in the
house, she was 19 and I am guessing that she was there
to help out with birth and the new baby.
Leinan died on 28th March 1932, he was 60 years old. He
was buried at Holy Trinity Churchyard, Usworth and a
gravestone was erected to his memory. The inscription
                        read:

In Loving Memory of Leinan, Beloved Husband of
Isabella Pallister Gaunt. Died March 28th 1932, Aged 60
Years. and at the bottom of the stone
it says: Until The Day Break |
