                        Richardson
                          Sarah Ann was born 
                        on 31st October 1872, her parents were John Purvis (an 
                        agricultural labourer) and his wife Ann (nee Mayer). Her 
                        birth was registered in the Tynemouth Registration 
                        District. The census of 1881 recorded the 
                        family at Fatfield in Co. Durham. Sarah's Dad was 39 and 
                        worked as a farm labourer, her Mam was 41. Sarah was 8 
                        years old and listed as a scholar as were her sister 
                        Mary Eleanor (12) and brother John Thomas (11). She also 
                        had an older sister, Margaret Jane (14), who was listed 
                        as a Domestic {servant} and a younger sister Martha Ann 
                        who was 4. By the time of the 1891 
                        census, Sarah was 17 and worked as a housekeeper. The 
                        family were living in Railway Cottages, Longbenton. 
                        In the third quarter of 1900, Sarah married Robert 
                        Richardson. Robert was a coal miner from Usworth. Their 
                        marriage was registered in the Chester le Street 
                        Registration district. Sarah's sister Mary Eleanor was 
                        the wife of Robert's brother, Thomas. The 
                        census of 1901 showed the couple at 4 Cooperative 
                        Terrace, Usworth. Sarah was 27 and her husband, Robert 
                        was 23, his occupation was listed as Coal-Stone Man. 
                        They had a little girl, Esther who was 2 months old. 
                        When the census of 1911 was taken, Sarah and her family 
                        were living at 13 Wood Terrace, New Washington. Sarah 
                        was 37 and her husband, Robert, was 33, he was working 
                        as a hewer in the colliery. The census return stated 
                        that they had been married for ten years and in that 
                        time Sarah had four children, 3 of whom were still 
                        living. The baby who had died was Doris, she had been 
                        born in 1905 and sadly died when she was one. Sarah's 
                        other three children were listed in the family home, 
                        Esther (10), Robert (8) and Sarah Annie (8 months). 
                        Sarah was to have another daughter, Irene, who was born 
                        in 1912. Sarah's husband, Robert died in 
                        April 1930 aged 52. His death was registered in the 
                        Chester le Street Registration District.  
                        Sarah died on 20th August 1960, she was 87 and her death 
                        was registered in the Banbury Registration District.  |
