Daughter of W.P. 'Bill'
Richardson's Great Aunt,
Sarah Isabella Howey
Georgina was born on 25th May 1888 in Witton le Wear, which was in the Auckland
Registration District. She was the first child of Walter
Potts and his wife Sarah Isabella (nee Howey) and was
named for her maternal Grandmother, Georgiana Howey (nee
Turnbull). She was baptised on 24th June
1888 at the parish church in Witton le Wear. Her baptism
record says her Dad was a labourer. The census of 1891 recorded
Georgina aged two. The family lived in Witton le Wear,
Co. Durham and her Dad was 38 and worked as a
brickmaker. Her Mam was 28 and Georgina had a
younger sister, Mary Eleanor who was 1.
The 1901 census recorded them again at Witton le Wear.
Dad, Walter, was 48 and working as a Sanitary Pipe Maker.
Mam, Sarah, was 38. Georgina was 12 and was now the
eldest of six children, her brother and sisters were
Mary Eleanor (11), Annie (8), John (6), Esther (4) and
Bertha (1). Like Georgina, all the children had been
born in Witton le Wear. By the time of
the 1911 census, Georgina was 22 and working for her
living. She was no longer listed in the family home but
appeared on the census return for Witton Castle, where
she was working as a housemaid. The 1911
census return for Georgina's parents showed that there
were two more children in the family who had died very
young, these were Isabel (1891-1892) and George Walter
(1901-1904). In the
third quarter of 1913, Georgina married Joseph Gray,
their marriage was registered in the Auckland
Registration District. She and Joseph were
to have 5 children that I know of, James Walter (born 1913),
Marjorie (born 1915), John (born 1919), Emily Isabel (born 1921) and Lucy Miriam (born 1923).
Georgina died on 22nd March 1965, she was 76
years old and her death was registered in the Durham
Western Registration District. She was buried in the
churchyard of the Etherley Parish Church on 25th March. |
