Sarah Isabella Howey
Esther was born in Witton le Wear on the
29th of August 1896. Her parents were Walter Potts and
his wife Sarah Isabella (nee Howey). She was baptised at
Witton le Wear Parish Church on 11th October 1896.
Esther was recorded with her family in Witton le Wear on
the 1901 census. She was 4 years old and had a brother
and four sisters. Georgina was 12, Mary Eleanor was 11,
Annie was 8, John was 6 and Bertha was 1.
The census of 1911 recorded Esther as 14 years old, her
Dad, Walter (58) worked as a labourer in the brick yard.
Mam, Sarah was 48. Esther's oldest sisters Georgina and
Mary Eleanor were no longer in the family home, her
sister Annie was 18 and worked as a day girl, domestic,
brother, John, was 16 and he worked as a labourer in the
brick yard like his Dad. Younger sister Bertha was 11
and she and Esther went to school.
This census showed that there were two more children in
the family who had died very young, these were Isabel
(1891-1892) and George Walter (1901-1904). In the last
quarter of 1919, Esther married Robert W. Greaveson.
Esther was 22 and Robert was 24, their marriage was
registered in the Auckland Registration District.
Esther and Robert were to have three children that I
know of, Ivy (born 1920), Bertie (born 1921) and Walter
(born 1923). Esther died on 20th February
1992. Her cremation took place at Durham Crematorium and
she is remembered in their Book of Remembrance. |
