Daughter of W.P. 'Bill'
Richardson's Great Aunt,
Sarah Isabella Howey
Bertha was born in the last quarter of
1899 in Witton le Wear and her birth was registered in
the Auckland Registration District. Her parents were
Walter Potts and his wife Sarah Isabella (nee Howey).
She was baptised on 19th November 1899 at the parish
church in Witton le Waer.
Bertha was counted in the 1901 census at the family home
in Witton le Wear, she was one year old. Her Dad, Walter
was 48 and he worked as a Sanitary Pipe Maker, her Mam
was 38. She had a brother and four sisters. Georgina
(12), Mary Eleanor (11), Annie (8), John (6) and Esther
(4). The census of 1911
recorded the family living in Witton le Wear, Bertha was
11 and attended school. Her Dad, Walter, was 58 and
worked as a labourer at the brick yard, Mam, Sarah, was
48. Bertha's older sisters Georgina and Mary Eleanor were no longer
in the family home but Annie (18) was there - she worked
as a day girl, domestic, John (16) was a labourer in the
brick yard and Esther (14) also attended school.
The 1911 census showed that there were two more children
in the family who had died very young, these were Isabel
(1891-1892) and George Walter (1901-1904).
In the third quarter of 1928, Bertha married Robert W
Bainbridge. Their marriage took place at the Parish
Church at Shireoaks, and was registered in the Worksop
Registration District. I am not sure why they were
married in Nottinghamshire, but they were listed as mourners
at W.P. Richardson's funeral in 1930 and were living in
Witton le Wear. Bertha died in the second
quarter of 1964, she was 64 years old and her death was
registered in the Durham Western Registration District.
