                        James Howey
                          Annie was born in 
                        the first quarter of 1876, her parents were Stephen 
                        Hodgson and his wife Isabella and her birth was 
                        registered in the Gateshead Registration District. 
                        The census of 1881 recorded the family living at 6,The 
                        Square, Little Usworth. Dad, Stephen, was 40 and listed 
                        as a Colliery Mechanic. Mam, Isabella, was 34.  
                        Annie was 6 and listed as a scholar. She had a brother, 
                        John (10)  and two sisters Isabella (3) and 
                        Margaret (1). Annie's father died in 
                        1885. She was recorded again in the 1891 
                        census, still in Little Usworth, but now at 46 Colliery 
                        Square. Her Mam was listed as a 45 year old widow and 
                        she'd had more children in the time since the last 
                        census (at least one of them long after her husband had 
                        died).  
                        Annie was 16 and the census return said she worked as a 
                        servant. Her brother John (20) was a Brakesman at the 
                        colliery. Her sisters Isabella (10) and Margaret (11) 
                        were scholars. Her new brothers were Heath (8), James 
                        (6) and Charles (3 months). There was also a boarder in 
                        the house, James Huntley (53) who was a stoneman at the 
                        colliery. On 27th August 1896, Annie 
                        married James Howey at Usworth Parish Church. James was 
                        20 and Annie was 21, he worked as a miner. Their 
                        witnesses were John Southern and Isabella Hodgson 
                        (Annie's sister). The census of 1901 
                        recorded them at Wash Houses , Birtley, Co. Durham. 
                        James was listed as the head of the household, he was 25 
                        and working in the colliery. Annie was 26, her mother 
                        Isabella and her sister Margaret also lived there, along  
                        three of her brothers, James, Heath and Charles. 
                        Annie and James had a son in 1902, Stephen Hodgson 
                        Howey, named for his maternal grandfather. Sadly he died 
                        soon after birth. Their second son Thomas 
                        was born in 1904. Annie and her family 
                        were recorded on the 1911 census. They lived at 11 
                        Westgarth Terrace, New Washington. Annie was 36 and her 
                        husband James was 33, he was still working in the 
                        colliery. Their son Thomas was 6. Annie 
                        had her last child, who they also called Annie, on 26th 
                        July 1915, They were living at 25 Front Street. 
                        There must have been problems with the birth as though 
                        the baby was fine, Annie died a few weeks later on 19th 
                        August 1915. She was 40 years old. 
                        Annie was buried at Holy Trinity, Usworth on 22nd August 
                        1915, the record in the parish register shows that the 
                        family's address was 25 Frnt Street.  |
