Second Wife
of W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Uncle,
James Howey
Sarah was born in
the second quarter of 1882 and her birth was registered
in the Houghton Registration District. Her parents were
John Pigg, a miner, and his wife Jane Ann (nee Hope).
She was recorded on the census of 1891, aged 8, living
with her family at Green Lane Villas, Harton, South
Shields. Her father was entered on the census form as
Thomas Pigg, but I think that was an error by the
enumerator. Her Dad was 39 and a coal miner, born in
Calton, Northumberland, all of which agrees with John
Pigg on later census forms. Her Mam, Jane, was 37 and
Sarah had an older brother, Philip (10) and three
younger sisters: Ann (6), Elizabeth (4) and Maria (1).
By the time of the 1901 census Sarah was 18 and working
for her living. She was recorded at 2 Joseph Terrace,
South Shields working as a servant for the family of a
Grocer and Draper called James Stephenson.
Sarah was back at home with her family for the 1911
census, she was 28 years old and had no occupation
listed. The family were living at 34, South View
Terrace, Tyne Dock. Sarah's Dad, John, was 59 and listed
as a coal miner , hewer, below ground. Mam, Jane, was 57
and a housewife. The other family members still at home
were Elizabeth (24) who was a book keeper for a
provision dealer, Maria (21) and Edith (18) had no
occupations listed and the youngest member of the family
was William (15) who attended school. On
26th May 1917 Sarah Jane married James Howey, a widower
with two children, at Usworth Parish Church. James was
recorded in the parish marriage register as being a 40
year old widower, who worked as a miner. Sarah Jane was
35 and a spinster. Their witnesses were Edith Pigg
(Sarah Jane's sister) and George Copeland.
I do not yet know when Sarah Jane died. |
