James Gilliland
Edith Evelyn was born
on 25th June 1900, she was the fifth child of
James Gilliland and his wife Mary Elizabeth (nee
Gardiner). Her birth was registered in the Lanchester
Registration District. She was baptised
on 29th July 1900 and her baptism was recorded in the
Primitive Methodist Baptism Register for Burnopfield
Circuit. That record shows that the family lived at
Burnopfield Colliery and Edith's Dad was a
Checkweighman. The census of 1901
recorded the family living at Burnopfield Colliery,
Tanfield, Co. Durham. Edith was 9 months old. Her Dad,
James was 34 and worked as a Checkweigher in the mine. Her Mam, Mary, was 29. She had three brothers, Hugh (6) John
James (4) and David (3), she also had a sister, Annie,
who had been born
in 1899 but had died soon after birth.
Edith's Mam, Mary died in 1905 when she was only four
years old, then her brother David, died in 1907.
Her father re-married in 1908 and her step mother was
Catherine (nee Gray) By the time of the
1911 census, the family were living in Birtley, at 69
Mitchell Street. Edith's Dad was 44 and listed as a
Political Registrations Agent, her step Mam, Catherine
was 30.
Edith was 10 in 1911 and was listed as being at school. The other children listed were
Hugh (16), John James
(14), Ernest (7) and their baby step
brother, George (10 months). Edith did
not marry, her nephew Roger Myers says she lived in
Lowes Barn Bank in Durham. Edith
died in the first quarter of 1962, she was 61 years old
and her death was registered in the Durham C
