Ethel was the
fourth child of Elizabeth Gilliland and her husband
William Robinson. She was born in the third quarter of
1897 and her birth was registered in the Auckland
Registration District. She was recorded,
aged 3, on the 1901 census at 18 Cold Knot Row, Crook
and Billy Row along with her family. Mam, Elizabeth, was
33, Dad, William, was 37 and worked as a coal miner.
Ethel had a brother, Ernest, who was 8 and three
sisters, Edith (9), Lenora (5) and Doris (1).
The 1911 census return showed that the family had moved
to Chopwell. Ethel was listed as being 13 and at school
