John was born on 12th November 1889, the second child of Harry Doyle Cotton and his wife Mary (nee Lee). His birth was registered in the Camberwell Registration District.

He was a year old when the census of 1891 was taken and was recorded with his family at 39 Arbuthnot Road, St. Paul, Deptford. His Dad, Harry was 25 and his occupation was listed as an assistant wool valuer. Mam, Mary was 27 and she was working as an assistant teacher. John had a brother, Harry Evelyn, aged two and there was also a general domestic servant, Anne E Cotton, who was born in Suffolk. Anne may have been a relation and she probably looked after the children when Mary was at work.

He was recorded on the census of 1901, with his family at 20 Erlanger Road, Deptford, aged 11. His Dad, Harry, was not at home for the census, nor was his older brother, who was also called Harry.
Mum, Mary, was counted in the house, she was 37 and worked as a teacher. John's younger sister Edith was counted too and she was 9.

John's older brother, Harry died in 1902, aged 14.

John went to live in Spain and in 1919 married Hilda Reid.

They had two children John Doyle (born 1920) and Margaret Evelyne (born 1922), they were both born in Spain.

John's wife, Hilda died in 1984, she was 84 years old. and her death was registered in the Surrey North Western Registration District.

John died on 17th November 1975 aged 86. His death was registered  in the Richmond on Thames Registration District.
