Esther was born in the third quarter of 1872. she was the fifth child of James Howey and his wife Dorothy (nee Hall) and her birth was registered in the Alnwick Registration District.

Her mother, Dorothy, died in 1879 when Esther was 7. Then her sister Jane died at the beginning of 1881.

In April 1881, when the census was taken, the family were living at West End, Amble. Esther was 8 and listed as a scholar. Her Dad, James was 34 and he worked as a coal miner. Esther's sisters, Elizabeth (16) and Sarah (14) were in the house along with her brother William (10).

A short while after the census both Esther's Dad, James, and her brother, William, died.

The 1891 census recorded her at Main St., Washington, Co. Durham. She was working as a domestic servant for Mrs Wilson, a draper, and her family.

In the second quarter of 1897, Esther married Alfred Henry Webb. Esther was 24 and Alfred was 26. Their marriage was registered in the Newcastle on Tyne Registration District.

In 1901 the census recorded Esther and her husband at 12 Hawthorn Terrace, Usworth, Co. Durham. Esther was 28 and had two children, Dorothy Allison (3) and James William (1). Her husband, Alfred, was 30 and worked as a manager at the hardware dept in the Co-op.

The census of 1911 showed the family living at 15 Mitchell Street, Birtley. Esther was 38 and her husband Alfred was 40. Alfred was now the grocery manager at the Co-op. The children, Dorothy (13) and James (11) were both listed as scholars.
