James Howey
Esther was born in the third quarter of 1872. she was
the fifth child of James Howey and his wife Dorothy (nee
Hall) and her birth was registered in the Alnwick
Registration District. Her mother,
Dorothy, died in 1879 when Esther was 7. Then her sister
Jane died at the beginning of 1881. In
April 1881, when the census was taken, the family were
living at West End, Amble. Esther was 8 and listed as a
scholar. Her Dad, James was 34 and he worked as a coal
miner. Esther's sisters, Elizabeth (16) and Sarah (14)
were in the house along with her brother William (10).
A short while after the census both Esther's Dad, James,
and her brother, William, died. The 1891
census recorded her at Main St., Washington, Co. Durham.
She was working as a domestic servant for Mrs Wilson, a
draper, and her family. In the second
quarter of 1897, Esther married Alfred Henry Webb.
Esther was 24 and Alfred was 26. Their marriage was
registered in the Newcastle on Tyne Registration
District. In 1901 the census recorded
Esther and her husband at 12 Hawthorn Terrace, Usworth,
Co. Durham. Esther was 28 and had two children, Dorothy
Allison (3) and James William (1). Her husband, Alfred,
was 30 and worked as a manager at the hardware dept in
the Co-op. The census of 1911 showed the
family living at 15 Mitchell Street, Birtley. Esther was
38 and her husband Alfred was 40. Alfred was now the
grocery manager at the Co-op. The children, Dorothy (13)
and James (11) were both listed as scholars.
