                        James Howey
                          Dorothy was the 
                        daughter of William Hall and his wife Elizabeth, her 
                        birth was registered in the first quarter of 1838 in 
                        Morpeth Registration District. The census 
                        of 1841 recorded the family at Great Tosson, 
                        Northumberland. Dorothy was 2 and was the youngest of 
                        the children listed. Her father, William (35), worked as 
                        an agricultural labourer, her mother, Elizabeth was also 
                        35. The other children listed were: Henry (14) Elizabeth 
                        (10), William (5) and Margaret (4) - though the census 
                        form is badly faded and very difficult to read. 
                        By the time of the 1851 census, they were living at 
                        Charity Hall, Alwinton, Northumberland. Dorothy was 11 
                        and listed as being 'at home' as were her sisters, 
                        Margaret (13) and Jane (2), Elizabeth (19) was working 
                        on the farm. Her brothers Richard (9) and Thomas (6) 
                        were listed as scholars and the older boys Henry (24)  
                        and William (16) were also working on the farm. Their 
                        Dad, William was 50 and worked as an agricultural 
                        labourer and Mam, Elizabeth was 47. 1861- 
                        and the census showed the family at Flotterton, 
                        Northumberland. Dorothy was 21 and working as an 
                        agricultural servant. Her Dad, William (60) also worked 
                        on the farm. Mam, Elizabeth was 57. Four of Dorothy's 
                        brothers and sisters still lived with their parents, 
                        Henry (33) was an agricultural labourer, Margaret (23) 
                        was a dressmaker. Thomas (16) was an agricultural 
                        labourer and Jane (12) was a scholar. There was also a 
                        baby in the house, William Hall (5 months) listed as 
                        William and Elizabeth's grandson. I don't know whose 
                        child he was. On 24th January 1863, 
                        Dorothy married James Howey at the Presbyterian Chapel 
                        in Thropton, Northumberland. Dorothy was 23 and James 
                        was 26, his occupation was given as Farm Labourer. Their 
                        witnesses were John Howey (James' brother) and Margaret 
                        Hall (Dorothy's sister). By the time of 
                        the 1871 census, Dorothy and James were living at Felton 
                        Mills, Felton, Northumberland. Dorothy was 31, her 
                        husband James (34) worked as a cartman for the mill. 
                        They had four children, Elizabeth (6), Sarah (4), Jane 
                        (2) and William (8 months). Dorothy died 
                        in the first quarter of 1879, her death was registered 
                        in the Alnwick Registration District.  |
