Wife of  W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Great Uncle, James Howey

Dorothy was the daughter of William Hall and his wife Elizabeth, her birth was registered in the first quarter of 1838 in Morpeth Registration District.

The census of 1841 recorded the family at Great Tosson, Northumberland. Dorothy was 2 and was the youngest of the children listed. Her father, William (35), worked as an agricultural labourer, her mother, Elizabeth was also 35. The other children listed were: Henry (14) Elizabeth (10), William (5) and Margaret (4) - though the census form is badly faded and very difficult to read.

By the time of the 1851 census, they were living at Charity Hall, Alwinton, Northumberland. Dorothy was 11 and listed as being 'at home' as were her sisters, Margaret (13) and Jane (2), Elizabeth (19) was working on the farm. Her brothers Richard (9) and Thomas (6) were listed as scholars and the older boys Henry (24)  and William (16) were also working on the farm. Their Dad, William was 50 and worked as an agricultural labourer and Mam, Elizabeth was 47.

1861- and the census showed the family at Flotterton, Northumberland. Dorothy was 21 and working as an agricultural servant. Her Dad, William (60) also worked on the farm. Mam, Elizabeth was 57. Four of Dorothy's brothers and sisters still lived with their parents, Henry (33) was an agricultural labourer, Margaret (23) was a dressmaker. Thomas (16) was an agricultural labourer and Jane (12) was a scholar. There was also a baby in the house, William Hall (5 months) listed as William and Elizabeth's grandson. I don't know whose child he was.

On 24th January 1863, Dorothy married James Howey at the Presbyterian Chapel in Thropton, Northumberland. Dorothy was 23 and James was 26, his occupation was given as Farm Labourer. Their witnesses were John Howey (James' brother) and Margaret Hall (Dorothy's sister).

By the time of the 1871 census, Dorothy and James were living at Felton Mills, Felton, Northumberland. Dorothy was 31, her husband James (34) worked as a cartman for the mill. They had four children, Elizabeth (6), Sarah (4), Jane (2) and William (8 months).

Dorothy died in the first quarter of 1879, her death was registered in the Alnwick Registration District.
