Daughter
of  W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Great Aunt, Jane Howey
                          Grace was the
third child of Thomas Rochester and his wife Jane (nee
Howey). She was born in the third quarter of 1883 and
her birth was registered in the Alnwick Registration
District. The census of 1891 recorded the
family at their home Refuge Cottage, Titlington,
Northumberland. Grace was 8 years old and her brothers
and sisters were listed as Robert (12), Esther (10), Jane
Ann (5), Elizabeth (3) and Thomas (2 months. Their Dad,
Thomas (51) worked as an agricutural labouer, Mam, Jane
was 45. The family were recorded again at
Refuge Cottage on the 1901 census. Grace was 18 and
worked at home as a dressmaker. The other children still
at home were Jane Ann (15) who worked as a general
servant, Elizabeth (13) and Thomas (10). Their Mam was
55 and their Dad was 61, and was listed as an estate
                        labourer (agricultural). Grace was still
at home with her parents at Refuge Cottage for the 1911
census. She was 28 and listed as a dressmaker. Her
sister Elizabeth (23) was also listed along with their
Dad, Thomas (71) who was still working as an estate
labourer, Mam, Jane (65) and their uncle, Jacob
Rochester (69) who was also an estate labourer.
On 10th June 1914, Grace married Abraham Wealleans.
Grace was 31 and Abraham was 29. Their marriage was
registered in the Alnwick Registration District.
Grace and Abraham had their first child, Robert, a
couple of months later on 26th August , followed by a
daughter Evelyn, born 20th December 1915 and William was
born in 1919. Grace's husband, Abraham,
like so many other young men, was in the army during
WW1. He joined up in May 1916 and was discharged in
March 1919. He served a year in France which must have
been a very worrying time for Grace back at home with
two young children. From Abraham's service record it
would seem that they lived at Refuge Cottage with
Grace's parents, both before he joined up and that was
the address on his discharge documents.
Abraham died in 1954, he was 72 years old and his death
was registered in the Northumberland North First
                        Registration District. Grace died in
1967, she was 84 years old and her death was also
registered in the Northumberland North First
                        Registration District. |
