Daughter
of W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Great Aunt, Jane Howey
Elizabeth was the
fifth child of Thomas Rochester and his wife Jane (nee
Howey). She was born in the first quarter of 1888 and
her birth was registered in the Alnwick
Registration District. She was baptised on January 29th
in the Parish of Edlingham. The census of 1891
recorded her, aged 3, in the family home at Refuge
Cottage, Titlington, Northumberland. Her Dad was 51 and
worked as a general labourer, her Mam was 45. Jane's
brothers and sisters were : Robert (12), Esther (10),
Grace (8), Jane Ann (5) and Thomas (2 months).
In 1901 the census showed the family still at Refuge
Cottage, Elizabeth was 13. The other children listed
were Grace (18), Jane Ann (15) and Thomas (10). Their
Dad was 61 and recorded as an estate labourer, Mam was
55. By the time of the 1911 census,
Elizabeth was 23, she still lived at home with her
parents and there was no occupation recorded for her.
Her Dad was 71 and he was still working as an estate
labourer, Mam was 65. Elizabeth's sister, Grace was also
still at home, she was 28 and worked as a dressmaker.
Their uncle, Jacob Rochester also lived with them, he
was 69 and worked on the estate as a labourer.
On August 2nd, 1927, at the age of 39, in the Bolton
Chapel in the Parish of Edlingham, Elizabeth married
William Jobson. He was a widower, aged 53 and he lived
in Alnwick. His occupation was given as a fishing tackle
manufacturer. One of the witnesses was Evelyn Mary
Wealleans. Elizabeth died on January 26th
1942. She was aged 54. Her address was 6 St Georges
Crescent in Alnwick. According to the Probate Calendar
she left £174 5s 2d and administration of her estate was
granted to her husband. She was
buried in Alnwick cemetery on January 29th, exactly 54
years after she was baptised. The headstone on the grave
showed others buried there: two previous wives of
William and two of his children and, in 1948, William
was also buried there.
