Jacob Turnbull
Isabella was born
in the first quarter of 1873. Her birth was registered
in the Alnwick Registration District and her parents
were Jacob Turnbull and his wife Mary (nee Craghild).
The census of 1881 recorded the family living at
Swarland, Northumberland. Isabella was 8 years old and
had three brothers, George (10) Thomas (5) and Jacob
(2). Their Mam, Mary, was 29 and their Dad, Jacob, was
40 and he worked as a rabbit catcher. By
the time of the 1891 census Isabella was 18 and working
for her living as an agricultural labourer. Two of her
brothers still lived at home: George (20), who was also
an agricultural labourer and Jacob (12) who was listed
as a scholar. Their Mam was 39 and their Dad was 50.
In the last quarter of 1900 Isabella married Robert
Nicholson, they were both 27 years old and their
marriage was registered in the Morpeth Registration
District. The couple were living at
Ulgham for the 1901 census, Isabella and RObert were
both 28years old and Robert worked as a coal miner. They
lived with Isabella's Dad, Jacob (60) who had given up
rabbit catching and wa working as a coal miner.
Isabella's brother, Jacob (22), also lived with them, he
too worked as a coal miner. The 1911
census recorded them at Stobswood Colliery, Acklington,
Northumberland. Isabella was 37 and the census form
stated they had been married for ten years and had one
child. Her husband, Robert (37) worked as a coal miner -
stone work. Their son George was 9 years old.
