Wife
of W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Great Uncle,
Jacob
Turnbull
Mary was born in
the second quarter of 1851 and her birth was registered
in the Rothbury Registration District. I am not yet sure
who her parents were, she may have been the daughter of
Thomas Cragild and his second wife Hannah or she may
have been Thomas's granddaughter. The
census of 1861 listed Mary as age 10, at Holling Hill,
Rothbury, Northumberland. She was recorded as a scholar
and the granddaughter of Thomas Gragild, a farmer.
In 1870, when Mary was 18, she married Jacob Turnbull.
Jacob was 31. Their marriage was registered in the
Alnwick Registration District. Mary was
19 when the 1871 census was taken. She was not at home
wth her husband but was listed as a visitor in the home
of William Cragild and his sister Jane at Abbeylands,
Northumberland. Mary's baby son George (10 months)
was with her. Her husband Jacb was recorded at home in
Eglingham, he was 30 and worked as a rabbit catcher.
By the time of the 1881 census Mary was 29. She and
Jacob had four children: George (10), Isabella (8),
Thomas (5) and Jacob (2). Her husband, Jacob, was 40 and
still catching rabbits for a living. They lived at
Swarland, Northumberland and had two lodgers, Benjamin
English (27) a waggon man and William Finn (21) a
sawyer's engine man. Mary also had some help in the
house, Margaret Greenup (16) was a domestic servant.
The family were living at Ford, Northumberland for the
1891 census. Mary was 39 and three of her four children
were still at home. George (20) and Isabella (18) worked
as agricultural labourers, Jacob (12) was a scholar. Her
husband, Jacob, was 50 and his occupation was recorded
again as rabbit catcher. Hanah Cragild (81) lived with
them and was listed as Jacob's mother in law, which
contradicts the 1861 census when she was listed as
Mary's grandmother, not her mother. I
have not been able to find a record of Mary's death but
assume she died between 1891 and 1901 as her husband was
recorded as a widower in 1901. |
