Aunt of  W.P. 'Bill' Richardson

The third child of John Edward Gilliland and Ada Isabel Lee, Gladys was born on 16th September 1905. Her birth was registered in the Lanchester Registration District of County Durham. The certificate shows that, at the time, the family were at Lintz Colliery, Tanfield. There must have been a period when the Sunniside pit was closed as other family members were also in this area for a while. The webpage for the pit on the Durham Mining Museum site shows that in 1902 Sunniside was 'not working'.

The 1911 census recorded the family at Sunniside, Tow Law, Co. Durham. Gladys was 5 years old and at school. Her father John Edward was 33 and was a hewer in the pit, her mother, Ada, was 32. Gladys had a brother John who was 4 and three sisters Vera (9), Rena (8) and Ada ( 5 months)

On the 30th November 1929, Gladys married Norman Hindmarch at the Primitive Methodist Church, Chester le Street. Their witnesses were John George Pringle and Ada Gilliland.
Gladys was 24 and her occupation was recorded as School Teacher, Norman was 25 and he worked as a Highway Surveyor.

Gladys and Norman had a son, David, who was born  in April 1932.

Norman died in the second quarter of 1951, he was 46 years old.

Gladys died on the 11th of November 1992, she was 87 years old, her death was registered in the Northallerton registration district. Her cremation took place at Durham Crematorium and her Cremated Remains were scattered there in the Garden of Remembrance.
