W.P. 'Bill' Richardson
The third child of John Edward Gilliland
and Ada Isabel Lee, Gladys was born on 16th September
1905. Her birth was registered in the Lanchester
Registration District of County Durham. The certificate
shows that, at the time, the family were at Lintz
Colliery, Tanfield. There must have been a period when
the Sunniside pit was closed as other family members
were also in this area for a while. The webpage for the
pit on the Durham Mining Museum site shows that in 1902
Sunniside was 'not working'.
The 1911 census recorded the family at
Sunniside, Tow Law, Co. Durham. Gladys was 5 years old
and at school. Her father John Edward was 33 and was a
hewer in the pit, her mother, Ada, was 32. Gladys had a
brother John who was 4 and three sisters Vera (9), Rena
(8) and Ada ( 5 months)
On the 30th November 1929, Gladys
married Norman Hindmarch at the Primitive Methodist
Church, Chester le Street. Their witnesses were John
George Pringle and Ada Gilliland.
Gladys was 24 and her occupation was recorded as School
Teacher, Norman was 25 and he worked as a Highway
Surveyor.
Gladys and Norman had a son, David, who was
born in April 1932.
Norman died in the second quarter of
1951, he was 46 years old.
Gladys died on the 11th of November
1992, she was 87 years old, her death was registered in
the Northallerton registration district. Her cremation
took place at Durham Crematorium and her Cremated
Remains were scattered there in the Garden of
Remembrance.
