The fourth child of Matthew Lee, a coal miner, and his wife Catherine (nee Walton). Thomas was born at Crook in the first quarter of 1867.

Thomas was baptised on 16th May 1867, his baptism was recorded in the Register of Crook Methodist Circuit.

He was recorded on the 1871 census,  aged 4 at Sunniside, Crook & Billy Row, Co. Durham along with his parents, sister Mary and two brothers John and Matthew.

The 1881 census recorded the family living in Gladstone Terrace, Crook and Billy Row. Thomas was 14 and working as a coal miner. In addition to the brothers and sister that were on the previous census, he had two other, younger, sisters, Sarah and Ada Isabel.

In the 1891 census, Thomas was recorded in the family home at Gladstone Terrace, Crook. He was 24 years old and a coal miner like his Dad.

On the 13th April 1894, Thomas married Alice Augusta C. Dawson at the Auckland Register Office.  Thomas was 27 and Alice was 25. Their witnesses were Timothy Blair and Sarah Lee (Thomas's sister).

The couple lived at 13, Victoria Street in Crook, but very sadly their happiness was quite shortlived as Thomas died on the 3rd of November 1896. The cause of death was given as Phthisis Pulmonalis and his death was registered by his father in law, John Dawson.
