Great Great Aunt of W.P.
'Bill' Richardson
Born on the 19th November 1837 at Hylton Dene, Mary
Ann Richardson was the fourth child of Thomas Richardson
and his wife Mary (nee Robinson).
She was baptised at the parish church in Monkwearmouth
on the 17th December 1837.
The 1841 census recorded Mary Ann, aged 3, at the family
home in Union Alley, Westoe, South Shields. Her father
Thomas was a brickmaker and she had two brothers: John
who was 10 and Thomas who was 15 months as well as a
sister, Isabella, who was 6.
By 1851 the family had moved to Usworth Colliery
Village. Mary Ann was thirteen and would have helped her
mother in the house. The family had grown so there would
be lots to do , though Isabella had left home, John (
now 20) and Thomas ( now 11) had been joined by the new
additions: Margaret (9). Eleanor (7), Robert (4) and
Anne, the baby, was 17 months.
The 1861 census recorded Mary still in the family home,
she was 23. Her father Thomas was 55, still working as a
brickmaker and her mother Mary was 52. Of her brothers
and sisters, the only ones still at home were Thomas and
Robert, who were both working as miners, and Ann who was
11. There was a baby in the house, recorded as Thomas
and Mary's grandson, his name was George and he was
Mary's baby. She is down on the census as unmarried so I
don't know who the father was or why he was not with
them.
In 1867, Mary Ann married Thomas Oliver, a miner who was
born at Craghead. Their marriage was registered in the
South Shields district.
The census of 1871 shows Mary Ann as 33 and her husband
Thomas (28) living at 147, Alma Terrace in Usworth, her
son George was 11, he is listed as Thomas's step son and
still has the surname Richardson.
On the 1881 census, Mary Ann was 43, her husband Thomas
was 38, he was still working as a coal miner and they were
living at Quarrington Hill, Coxhoe. Her son George was
no longer living with them.
So far, I haven't found any more information about Mary
Ann after the 1881 census.
