Husband of W.P. 'Bill'
Richardson's Aunt, May Richardson
Anthony (Art)
Robson was born on 18th June, 1900 at 11 Albany Street,
Sunderland. He was the second child of John Robson, who
was at that time a sea-going engineer, and his wife Elizabeth
(nee Smith). His elder brother, John Herbert, was 2
years old.
The 1901 census took place shortly afterwards and Art
(aged 9 months) and his mother are shown as passengers
on board the vessel the Amphitrite. His father was the
second engineer but there is no sign of his brother
Bert. Research suggests that the Amphitrite had just
arrived from Rotterdam and was moored in the Tyne prior
to disembarking. The house where Art had been born a few
months previously was unoccupied.
In the second quarter of 1904, the family was added to
with the birth of his sister, Lillian Hannah. Her birth
was registered in the Easington District.
At the time of the 1911 census, the family were at 3
Princess Road, Seaham Harbour. Art was now 10, his
mother was 45 and his father was 47. His sister was 7
and his brother, who was down as John H, was 13. Also
recorded was his grandfather, John Robson (Sr), aged 76.
The occupation of both his father and grandfather was
shown as 'house furnisher'.
Art married May Richardson on 5th November 1928 at the
Primitive Methodist Jubilee Chapel, Durham. He was 28
years old and worked as a Property Repairer, May was 26.
Their witnesses were Art's brother, John Herbert Robson,
and May's sister, Margaret Pallister Richardson.
In later years
Art earned his living as a newsagent,
On 2nd February, 1930, Art became a father when his son
John Robson was born. John was the first grandchild of
WP and the only one that WP actually knew.
Art's father-in-law died in August 1930 and in the list
of mourners, Art and May are shown as living in
Sunderland. (Also listed as being present were a Mr and
Mrs J Robson, presumably Art's parents).
In the third quarter of 1932, Art and May completed
their family with the arrival of their daughter, Esther.
In the following years, Art continued as a newsagent in
the Whitley Bay area of Northumberland and when he
retired, he and May shared a home with their daughter.
Art died on 16th October 1975 and his cremation took
place at Whitley Bay Crematorium. |
