George Howey
Ann Elizabeth was
born in the third quarter of 1868, her parents were
Thomas Smith and his wife Mary (nee Mitchell).
Ann was recorded on the census of 1871
aged 2. Her Dad, Thomas, was 42 and working as a coal
miner, Mam, Mary was 41. Ann had two brothers and a
sister, William (20), Thomas (15) and Mary (10). Her
aunt, Catherine Mitchell also lived with the family.
By the time of the 1881 census, the
family were living at 3 Finsbury St, Monkwearmouth. Ann
was 12 and listed as a scholar. Her Mam must have died
since the last census and her Dad had remarried as his
wife was now listed as Elizabeth.
On the 1891 census the family were
living at 28 Single Row, Great Usworth. Ann was 22,
there was no occupation listed for her. Her Dad was
still working as a coal miner.
On 10th October 1892 Ann married George
Howey at the parish church in Usworth. Ann was 24 and
George was 21, his occupation was Draper's Assistant.
Thier witnesses were George's sister, Esther Howey and
his cousin John Thomas Bolam.
The 1901 census recorded them in
Sunderland. They were living at the Phoenix pub at 40
Chester Road, Ann's husband was listed as a Beer
Retailer.
In the last quarter of 1901, Ann's
husband, George, died, he was 30 years old.
In 1908, Ann re-married, her second
husband was William Turnbull Sanderson.
The census of 1911 showed that William
and Ann were running a pub called the Queens Head in Low
Row, Sunderland.
As yet, I do not know when Ann died.
