                        George was born in the third quarter of 1871 and was 
                        the third child of Thomas Howey and his wife Georgiana ( 
                        nee Turnbull). 
                        He was baptised at Holy Trinity, Usworth on the 23rd 
                        July 1871, the baptism record shows that the family 
                        lived at Usworth and that George's Dad was a labourer. 
                         
                        The 1881 census recorded him as a nine year old scholar, 
                        living in the family home in High Usworth, Co. Durham. 
                         
                        In 1891 the census showed that the family had moved to 
                        number 38, Railway Terrace in Usworth and George was 
                        still living with his parents. He was 19 and working as 
                        a Draper's Assistant. 
                         
                        George was married on 10th October 1892 at the 
                        age of 21, his wife was Ann Elizabeth Smith (24). Ann's 
                        father was a miner and he and his family had moved to 
                        Usworth from Monkwearmouth at some time between 1881 
                        and 1891. George's occupation was recorded in the 
                        marriage register as Draper's Assistant. Their witnesses 
                        were John Thomas Bolam (George's cousin, the son of his 
                        Aunt Jane (nee Turnbull) and George's sister Esther 
                        Howey. 
                         
                        The 1901 census recorded George and Ann at number 40 
                        Chester Road in Sunderland. George was 29 and Ann was 
                        32. Number 40 was a public house called the Phoenix Inn 
                        and George's occupation was listed as Beer Retailer. The 
                        census also said he was working on his 'Own Account' 
                        which means he owned the business rather than being 
                        employed by someone else.  
                        George died in the last quarter of 1901, he was just 30 
                        years old. He was buried at Bishopwearmouth Cemetery 
                        Ward 16, Section A, Grave Number 1460 on 5th October 
                        1901. The burial records state that he was 30 years old, 
                        occupation Publican and  he died in the Infirmary.
