Wife
of W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Uncle, William
Gilliland
Lily was born on
15th November 1880, she was the daughter of
William Tweddell and his wife Mary. Her birth was
registered in the Shardlow Registration District and she
was born in Long Eaton, Nottinghamshire.
The census of 1881 recorded Lily as age 4 months, living
at 8 Midland Rd., Long Eaton with her father William
(32) who was a Railway Guard originally from Hexham and
her mother Mary (25) who was born in Chester le Street
and brother Thomas who was 1. By the time
fo the 1891 the family had moved to Lintz Colliery,
Tanfield in Co. Durham. Lily was 10 and listed as a
scholar. Her Dad, William was working as a 'stationary
engineman' and they had obviously come to Durham via
Yorkshire as one of Lily's brothers had been born in
Leeds. On the 1901 census , the family
were living in Garibaldi St. in Tanfield. Lily was 20.
Her Dad was listed as a newsagent working on his own
account, so, as there was no occupation listed for Lily
perhaps she helped her Dad. On 8th
October 1906, Lily married William Gilliland who was a
miner. They were married at the parish church in
Burnopfield and their witnesses were William Tweddell
and Ethel Tweddell.
The census of 1911 showed the couple at 8 South View,
The Court, Lintz. Lily was 30 and her husband William
was 40. William was working as a coal miner - hewer.
They had two children Mary (3) and Hugh (2).
Lily and William had more children, Elsie (born 1912),
David (born 1914), Lily (born 1916) and Grace (born
1920). Great sadness for the family when Elsie died,
less than a year old in 1913.
Lily's husband, William, died on the 20th October 1961,
he was 90 years old. Lily died on the
17th May 1963, she was 82 years old. Her death was
registered in the Durham NW Registration District. |
