Great Uncle of
W.P. 'Bill' Richardson
William was born on the 27th October 1870 at Whitelee in Crook and Billy Row,
Co. Durham. His parents were David Gilliland, a miner,
and his wife Elizabeth (nee Mc Collough).
In the 1871 census William was recorded living with his
family at Whitelee and was just 5 months old.
The 1881 census recorded the family living at Grahamsley
in Crook and Billy Row and William was listed as a ten
year old scholar.
By the time of the 1891 census, the family were living
in Gladstone Terrace, Crook and Billy Row. The house
they lived in was recorded as having 4 occupied rooms,
with ten people listed as living there. William was
recorded as being 20 years old and was working as a coal
miner.
The 1901 census recorded that William was living at
number 35 Gorches Row, Lintz Colliery, Tanfield, Co.
Durham. He was 30 and working as a Coal Miner - Hewer.
It was the home of his younger brother David who lived
there with his wife and family.
On 8th October 1906 William married Lily Tweddell
at the parish church in Burnopfield, Co. Durham. William
was 35 and gave his occupation as Miner, Lily was 25.
Their marriage certificate says they both lived at Lintz
and their witnesses were William Tweddell and Ethel
Tweddell.
The 1911 census recorded them at 8 South View, The
Court, Lintz, Durham. William was 40 and working as a
coal miner -hewer. Lily was 30 and they had two
children, Mary aged 3 and Hugh aged 2.
William and Lily had four more children Elsie (born
1912), David (born 1914), Lily (born 1916) and Grace
(born 1920). Sadly Elsie did not live long and died in
1913.
William died on the 20th October 1961, he was 90 years
old.
