Eleanor was born
in the second quarter of 1841, she was the daughter of
Joseph Bell and his wife Mary Ann. Her birth was
registered in the Morpeth Registration District.
In 1841 when the census was taken the family were living
at Newminster Abbey in Northumberland. Eleanor was just
a month old. Her Dad was working as an agricultural
labourer and her Mam would have been busy looking after
the family. Eleanor had 2 sisters, Jane (14) and
Ann (4) as well as two brothers, John (11) and
William (2). By the time of the 1851
census Eleanor was 10 and attended school. The family
had moved and were living at Blakemoor, Cresswell,
Northumberland. Her Dad, Joseph, was 50 and his
occupation was listed as an agricultural labourer, Mam,
Mary Ann, was 40. The other children in the house were:
Ann (14), William (12), Joseph (8), George (6) and
Elizabeth (1). They were in Durham for
the 1861 census, living at The Stables, Lamesley.
Eleanor was 19 and her occupation was down as 'household
work'. Her Dad, Joseph was 59 and working as a
ploughman, her mother was not in the household though
her father was listed as being married rather than
widowed. The other children recorded were George (15)
who was an agricultural labourer and Elizabeth (11), a
scholar. In the third quarter of 1869
Eleanor married John Howey at St John the Baptist
Church, Newcastle on Tyne. Eleanor was 27 and John was
26. The 1871 census recorded the couple
at Chirton, Tynemouth. Eleanor was 29 and had a
daughter, Annie Mary who was 9 months old. John was 28
and was working as an agricultural labourer.
Eleanor and John had a son in 1872, they called him
Adam, after John's father. Sadly, Adam died in 1873 when
he was just a year old.
By the time of the 1881 census Eleanor was 39 and she
had six children Annie Mary (10), Esther (7), Sarah Jane
(5), Joseph Bell (3), John George (2) and Louisa Eleanor
(11 months). Her husband, John, was 38 and working as a
labourer. The family lived at West Percy Street,
Tynemouth. Another little boy, William,
was born in 1882 but he too did not live long and his
death was registered in the quarter after his birth.
Joseph Bell Howey died in 1884, he was six years old. The
census of 1891 showed Eleanor as age 49, she and her
family were living at Bedford Street, Tynemouth. Her
husband was 48 and worked as a furnaceman. Four of her
children still lived with their parents : Esther (17),
Sarah Jane (15), John George (12) and Louisa Eleanor
(11). In 1901 Eleanor was 59, the
children had all left home and just she and John were
recorded at Nelson Street, Tynemouth. John was 58 and
worked as a horsekeeper ( groom). Eleanor
died in the third quarter of 1905, she was 64 years old
and her death was registered in the Tynemouth
Registration District. |
