Great Great Uncle of W.P.
'Bill' Richardson
John was born about 1843 at New Bewick in
Northumberland, he was the fourth child of Adam Howey
and his wife Sarah (nee Watson)
The 1851 census recorded him as a scholar age 8 living
with his family at Silverside Farm, Snitter,
Northumberland. His father was a farm worker and the
family moved from farm to farm over the years.
In 1861 John was 18 and the family were living in a farm
cottage at Shawdon Wood House. John worked on the farm
as did his father Adam and his siblings Thomas and Jane.
His sister Esther worked as a dressmaker and his Mam,
Sarah, would have cooked cleaned and washed for them
all.
In the third quarter of 1869, John married Eleanor Bell
at St. John the Baptist church Newcastle upon Tyne. John was 26 and Eleanor, who was
originally from Longhorsley in Northumberland, was 27.
John and Eleanor set up home in Chirton near Tynemouth
where he was working as an agricultural labourer. They
are recorded there on the 1871 census with their baby
daughter Annie Mary aged 9 months. Eleanor and Annie
Mary were actually away visiting John's father at the
time of the census and were also recorded in Glanton!
In 1872 they had another little boy who they called
Adam, after John's father. Sadly Adam died in 1873.
By the time of the 1881 census, John was listed as a 38
year old labourer and Eleanor was 39.
They were living at number 12 West Percy St, North
Shields, Tynemouth. Their family had grown considerably
in the years since the last census. In addition to Annie
Mary (now 10) there was Esther (7), Sarah Jane (5)
Joseph Bell (3) John George (2) and Louisa Eleanor (11
months). The three older children attended school.
In 1882 John and Eleanor had another son, William, who
died quite soon after birth. More sadness for the family when Joseph Bell Howey died in
1884, aged 6.
The census of 1891 recorded the family at 52 Bedford
Street, North Shields.
John was 48 and working as a Furnaceman, his wife
Eleanor was 49.
Four of their children were recorded with them, Esther,
Sarah Jane, John and Louisa Eleanor. Annie Mary was not
at home.
In 1901 the census recorded John aged 58 and Eleanor
aged 59. John was working as a 'horsekeeper-groom' and
they were living at 6, Nelson Street in North Shields.
Their children had all left home.
In the third quarter of 1905, John's wife, Eleanor,
died. She was 64 years old and her death was registered
in the Tynemouth Registration District.
The census of 1911 recorded John living with his
daughter Esther and son in law George Henry Vallack.
John was 68 and listed as a widower.
I do not yet have a record for John's death.
