Turnbull
George was born in
1865 at Shawdon Woodhouse, Northumberland. His parents
were George Bolam and his wife Jane (nee Turnbull).
He was 5 years old when the census of
1871 was taken and was recorded living in the farmhouse
with his parents, George (44), who was the farmer, and
Jane (33), brothers Robert (11), William (1) and sisters
Mary (8) and Catherine (3).
George's brother William died in 1872,
aged 2 and his other brother, Robert, died in 1879, aged
19.
In 1881, George was 15 and was recorded
as 'farmer's son'. His Dad, George, was 54 and a farmer
of 633 acres employing 13 labourers and two boys, his
Mam, Jane was 43. Sisters Mary (18) and Catherine (13)
were still at home and they had a younger brother, John
Thomas (9). Their maternal grandfather, George Turnbull
(71) also lived with them.
George's father died in 1888.
The census of 1891, recorded George as
25 and the farmer's steward. His Mam, Jane (53) was
listed as the farmer. His brother, John Thomas (19)
worked on the farm and his sister Mary was also there
with her husband and baby son. George's cousin, Thomas H
Turnbull (15) lived with them and worked on the farm
too.
In the second quarter of 1892, George
married Jane Dixon. George was 26 and Jane was 31. Their
marriage was registered in the Alnwick Registration
District.
By the time of the 1901 census, George's
mother had moved into a farm cottage and George (35) and
his family lived in the farm house. He was recorded as
the farmer. His wife, Jane, was 40 and they had three
children: George (6), Margaret (4) and Jane (2).
His wife's mother and brothers also lived in a cottage
on the farm. George's daughter, Jane,
died in 1905 aged 6. George completed and
signed the 1911 census form, he was 45 years old and a
farmer at Shawdon Woodhouse. His wife, Jane, was 49 and
he stated on the form that they had been married for 18
years and they'd had four children, one of whom had
died. Their daughter Margaret (14) was recorded on the
farm, but in the cottage of her maternal grandmother,
Margaret Dixon. The two boys were at home, George (16)
was listed as farmer's son working on the farm and
William John (8) presumably attended school. there was
also a general domestic servant, Frances Lilian Harvey,
who was 17. George's wife, Jane, died in
1925, she was 64 years old. George died
on 7th June 1940, he was 75 and his death was registered in the
Northumberland 1st Registration District.
Probate was granted to his sons, George and William
John, and his brother, John Thomas, on 19th July 1940.
His effects amounted to £3894:15s:2d. |
