Daughter
of W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Great Aunt, Jane
Turnbull
Catherine was born
in the second quarter of 1867 at Shawdon Woodhouse,
Northumberland. Her parents were George Bolam and his
wife Jane (nee Turnbull).
The 1871 census recorded her, aged 3,
living in the farm house at Shawdon Woodhouse with her
family. Her Dad, George (44) was the farmer, her Mam,
Jane, was 33. Catherine had a sister, Mary (8) and three
brothers Robert (11), George (5) and William (1).
Catherine's brother William died in
1872, aged 2, her brother Robert died in 1879, aged 19.
In 1881 the census recorded Catherine as
age 13 and a scholar. The family were still at Shawdon
Woodhouse, her Dad was 54, Mam was 43. Her sister Mary
was 18, brother George was 15 and recorded as farmer's
son. They had a younger brother, John Thomas. who was 9.
Catherine's maternal grandfather, George Turnbull (71)
lived with the family.
Catherine's father, George, died in
1888.
In the fourth quarter of 1890. Catherine
married John Dickson, Catherine was 22 and John was 23.
Their marriage was registered in the Alnwick
Registration District. Catherine's
husband, John, was a platelayer for the railway and the
1891 census recorded them living at 8 N.E.R. Cottages,
Washington, Co. Durham. In 1899 Catherine
and John had a daughter, Jane. Sadly she did not live
long and her death was registered in the same quarter as
her birth. The census of 1901 showed
Catherine living at Glanton Station, Northumberland. She
was 33 and had a son, David, who was 4. Her husband,
John, was 34 and worked as a platelayer.
Their little boy, David, died in 1904, he was 7 years
old. Later in 1904, Catherine and John
had another son, Bolam.
On the 1911 census Catherine was 43,
John was 44 and they lived at Plantation House, Glanton,
Northumberland. The census form stated they had been
married for 20 years and they'd had five children, only
one of whom was still alive. I haven't yet been
able to find records of the other two babies. John had
changed occupations and was working as a gamekeeper.
Their son, Bolam, was 6. Catherine's mother, Jane Bolam
(73) was visiting at the time of the census.
Catherine died in 1924, she was 59 years old and her
death was registered in the Alnwick Registration
District. |
