John Thomas was
the last child of George Bolam and his wife Jane (nee
Turnbull). He was born in 1871 and his birth was
registered in the Alnwick Registration District.
The census of 1881 recorded him, aged 9,
at Shawdon Woodhouse, living with his family. His Dad,
George (54) was a farmer, his Mam, Jane, was 43. The
other people in the house were his brother George (15),
sisters Mary (18) and Catherine (13) along with their
maternal grandfather, George Turnbull, who was 71.
John's father, George died in 1888. In
1891, John was 19 and working on the farm. His mother,
Jane, was listed as the farmer and his brother, George,
was the farm steward. John's sister Mary and her husband
and baby also lived with them, as did his cousin, Thomas
Turnbull. In the second quarter of 1893
John married Hannah Hume. John was 21 and Hannah was 26,
their marriage was registered in the Alnwick
Registration District. By the time of the
1901 census, John and Hannah were living in Glanton.
John was 29 and he was a butcher (employer). Hannah was
34 and they had five children. Mary (7), Jane (5),
Hannah (3), Isabella (1) and George (3 months). John's
sister Mary and her family lived next door.
The 1911 census showed that John had changed occupation
again. He was the farmer at Town Farm, Eglingham. His
age was given as 39, Hannah was 43. The census
form said they had been married for 19 years and they'd
had 9 children, all of whom were listed in the
household. Mary (17) and Jane (17) were both
assisting in the farm house, Hannah (13), Isabella (11),
George (10) and Catherine (8) attended school. The
little ones were twins, John and Thomas (4) and Robert
(6 months). John's wife, Hannah, died in
1942. She was 75 years old. John died,
aged 83, in 1955. His death was registered in the
Northumberland Central Registration District. |
