William Fatherley
Gilliland was born on 11th May 1865 and his
birth was registered in the Houghton le Spring
Registration District. His parents were Hugh Gilliland
and his wife Margaret (nee Fatherley). He
was baptised at West Rainton Parish Church on 30th May
1866 when he was just over a year old. The baptism
record shows that his father worked as a miner and that
the family lived at West Rainton.
William was recorded on the census of 1871 aged 5. The
family lived at West Rainton and his Dad, Hugh, was 30
and worked as a coal miner. His Mam, Margaret, was 27.
William had an older brother, James, who was 7.
His sister, Margaret, was born in 1876.
William's mother, Margaret, died in 1879, when he was
15. They were still in West Rainton for
the next census in 1881. They lived at Johnson's
Buildings and William was 15 years old. He was listed as
a scholar. Dad, Hugh, was 38 and worked as a coal miner,
brother, James, was 17 and working as a telegraph clerk
and sister, Margaret, was 4 and recorded as a scholar.
William's cousin, Frances Annie Childs, lived with them
and was listed as a domestic servant.
Later in 1881, William's Dad re-married. William's step
mother was Jane Thompson. By the time of
the 1891 census, the family were living at Main Street,
West Rainton. William was 25 years old and was an
assistant (certificated) schoolmaster. His Dad was 48
and worked in the colliery, step Mam, Jane, was 49.
William's brother, James, was 27 and worked as a
colliery clerk, their sister, Margaret, was 14 and a
pupil teacher. William's step mother,
Jane, died in 1898. The 1901 census
showed that William's father had changed occupation and
was the publican at the Grey Hound Inn, West Rainton,
and that is where the family lived. William was 35 and
an assistant schoolmaster. His brother, James, was 37
and still working as a clerk at the colliery. His
sister, Margaret, was 24 and was an assistant
schoolmistress. The family were still at
the Grey Hound Inn for the 1911 census. William was 45
and still taught at the school. His Dad, Hugh (68), was
listed as a licensed victualler and brother, James (47),
assisted in the business. Their sister, Margaret, was no
longer in the family home. William died
on 7th November 1926, he was 61 years old and his death was
registered in the Houghton le Spring Registration
District. Probate was granted to his
brother, James, and his sister, Margaret Fawcett
(widow), on 15th December
1926. William's effects amounted to £1145:13s:6d. |
