Great Great Uncle of  W.P. 'Bill' Richardson

Hugh was the fourth (known) child of James Gilliland and his wife Elizabeth. He was born in Comber, Co. Down, Ireland in about 1842.

On the 1851 census Hugh was recorded with his mother and brothers at West Rainton, Co. Durham. He was 10 and the family had left Ireland for England, the census says his mother was a widow and I assume his father had died in Ireland as I can't find an English record of his death. Hugh and his three brothers: James (21), David (14) and John (12), were all working in the pit at West Rainton.

In 1861, the census recorded Hugh aged 19 in West Rainton living with his mother Elizabeth and brother John. Hugh and John both worked in the pit.

On 14th June 1863, at the age of 21, Hugh married Margaret Fatherley, the daughter of a coal miner from West Rainton. They were married at West Rainton Parish Church and their witnesses were William Fatherley and John Thompson. Margaret signed her name in the register and Hugh made his mark.

On the 1871 census, Hugh was 30. He and Margaret were living in West Rainton where Hugh still worked as a coal miner. They had two children, James was 7 and William Fatherley Gilliland was 5.

In 1876 Hugh and Margaret had a daughter who they named Margaret after her mother.

Hugh's wife, Margaret, died in 1879.

On the 1881 census, Hugh was recorded as a widower, 38 years old and working as a coal miner. His son James was 17 and working as a telegraph clerk, William F. was 15 and listed as a scholar and Margaret was 4. There was also a 17 year old domestic servant, Frances Annie Child, who was recorded as being Hugh's niece. Frances Annie was the daughter of Hugh's wife's sister.

On 15th September 1881 Hugh re-marrried at West Rainton Parish Church. His wife was Jane Thompson.

On the 1891 census, Hugh and Jane were living at Main Street, Southside, West Rainton. Hugh was 48 and still working as a coal miner and Jane was 49. Hugh's children still lived with him, James was 27 and working as a colliery clerk, William F. was 25 and an 'Assistant Schoolmaster-certificated'. Margaret was 14 and was a Pupil Teacher.

Hugh's second wife, Jane, died in 1898.

At the time of the 1901 census, Hugh was 58 and again listed as a widower. He was no longer working in the pit and was listed as an Inn Keeper at the Grey Hound Inn, South Street, West Rainton. He was recorded as 'Working at Home, on own account'.  All three of his children lived with him. James was 37 and still working as a colliery clerk, William F. was 35 and an assistant schoolmaster and Margaret was 24 and an assistant schoolmistress. They had a domestic servant, Jane Mateer (possibly McTeer) who was 14 .

The census of 1911 recorded Hugh still at the Grey Hound Inn. he was 68 years old and his occupation was recorded as Licensed Victualler. His two sons still lived with him. James was 47 and listed as 'assisting in the business', William was 45 and a school teacher. There was also a domestic servant in the house, Annie Gowland who was 18.

Hugh was still  listed as the publican of the Grey Hound when Kelly's Directory of Durham 1914 was published.

Hugh died on 7th December 1915, he was 72 years old and his death was registered in the Durham Registration District.

Probate was granted to his son, James, on 6th January 1916. Hugh's effects amounted to £68.
