Daughter of W.P. 'Bill'
Richardson's Great Great Uncle, Hugh Gilliland
Margaret was born
on 3rd August 1876 at West Rainton, Co. Durham. Her
parents were Hugh Gilliland and his wife Margaret (nee
Fatherley). Her baptism was at West
Rainton Parish Church on 6th September 1876, when she
was one month old. Sadly, Margaret's
mother died in 1879 when Margaret was only two.
Margaret was recorded on the census of 1881 aged 4 and
she was listed as a scholar. The family lived at
Johnson's Buildings in West Rainton. Her Dad, Hugh, was
38 and worked as a coal miner. Margaret had two
brothers: James (17), who worked as a telegraph clerk
and William (15) who was a scholar.
Margaret's father re-married later in 1881. Her step
mother was Jane Thompson. The census of
1891 recorded the family living at Main Street, West
Rainton. Margaret was 14 years old and was a pupil
teacher. Her Dad, Hugh, was 48 and a coal miner, her
step Mam , Jane, was 49. Margaret's brother were also
recorded, James (27) was a colliery clerk and William
(25) was an assistant certificated schoolmaster.
Margaret's step mother, Jane died in 1898.
By the time of the 1901 census, Margaret's father had
changed occupation and was no longer working in the
mine. He was the publican at the Grey Hound Inn and that
is where the family were living. Margaret was 24 and was
an assistant schoolmistress. Her brothers were still at
home, James (37) was still working as a clerk at the
colliery and William (35) was teaching.
On 10th December 1902, Margaret married William Coulson
Fawcett at East Rainton Parish Church.
They were recorded on the 1911 census at 99 Office
Street, Littleburn, Co. Durham. Margaret was 34 and
WIlliam was 36, he worked as a Colliery Official (below
ground). The census form stated that they had been
married for 8 years and they'd had three children. All
the children were listed in the house: Ada (6), Hugh
Coulson (4) and William (2). They were to have another
two children, James (born 1914) and Henry (born 1917).
William, Margaret's husband, died on 7th December 1925,
Margaret and her son Hugh Coulson Fawcett ( who was a
colliery fitter) were granted probabte on 16th January
1926. His effects amounted to £1971:11s:3d.
I do not yet have a record of Margaret's death. |
