                          Margaret was born 
                        in the last quarter of 1842 at West Rainton, Co. Durham. 
                        Her parents were William Fatherley and his wife 
                        Margaret. She was recorded on the census 
                        of 1851 at West Rainton aged 8. Her Dad, William, was 49 
                        and worked as a coal miner. Mam, Margaret, was 47. Her 
                        brothers and sisters were : Mary Ann (22), William (20) 
                        who was a coal miner, Alice (17), Jane (11), Robert (4) 
                        and Thomas (2 months). The family were 
                        still in West Rainton ten years later for the 1861 
                        census. Margaret was 18, there was no occupation listed 
                        for her. Her Dad was 58 and her Mam was 56. The other 
                        children still at home were Alice (26), Robert (14) who 
                        was working as a blacksmith and Thomas (10). There was 
                        also a visitor recorded in the house, Sarah Broughton 
                        who was 3. In the second quarter of 1863, 
                        Margaret married Hugh Gilliland, a coal miner originally 
                        from Ireland. Their marriage was registered in the 
                        Houghton le Spring Registration District. 
                        Margaret and Hugh continued to live in West Rainton and 
                        were recorded there on the census of 1871. Margaret was 
                        27  and her husband, Hugh, was 30, he worked as a 
                        miner. Margaret and Hugh had two children James (7) and 
                        William (5). Margaret's daughter, also 
                        called Margaret, was born in 1876. 
                        Margaret died in 1879, she was 36 years old. She was 
                        buried at West Rainton on 4th June 1879.    |
