Aunt, Sarah Lee
Mary Ellen was
born in 1861 and her birth was registered in the
Auckland Registration District. Her parents were William
Turner and his wife Sarah (nee Lee). Mary
Ellen was 1 month old at the time of the 1861 census,
her family were living at Peases Cottages, Crook and
Billy Row. Dad, William, was 24 and worked as a coal
miner, Mam, Sarah, was 26. Mary Ellen's sister, Isabella
(4) was staying with her Granny and Granda Lee elsewhere
in Crook and Billy Row. The family were
still In Crook and Billy Row when the 1871 census was
taken. They lived at Moor Roddy Row. Mary Ellen was 10
years old and had a sister, Isabella (14) and a brother,
Robert (7). Mary Ellen's mother, Sarah,
died in 1875 when Mary Ellen was 14. The
family had moved to Middlestone, Co. Durham by the time
of the 1881 census, they lived at Long Row. Mary Ellen
was 20 and presumably looked after the hosue and her
father and brother who were also listed. William, her
Dad, was 45 and Robert, her brother, was 17. They
both worked in the coal mine. In the
second quarter of 1882, Mary Ellen married Ralph
Daglish. Their marriage was registered in the Auckland
Registration District, Mary Ellen was 21 and Ralph was
31. Mary Ellen's father, William, died in
1884. The census of 1891 recorded Mary
Ellen still at Long Row, Middlestone. She was 32 and her
husband Ralph, was 42, he worked as an assurance agent.
They had five children : Sarah (8), Matthew (7), Alice
(5), Annie (3) and John (3 months). For
the next census, 1901, they were living at 65
Speculation Place, Washington, Co. Durham. Mary Ellen
was 42. Her husband, Ralph, was 53 and working in the
mine as a rolleyway man. They had six children listed :
Sarah (18), Matthew (17), Alice (15), Annie (14), John
(10) and Ralph (6) - though the enumerator has crossed
out Sarah's name as she was not at home on the night of
the census, she was in Newcastle where she worked as a
domestic servant. The 1911 census
recorded Mary Ellen and her family at 2 Middle Row
Cottages, Washington. Mary Ellen was 53 and the census
form stated that she and Ralph had been married for 29
years and they'd had 10 children, of whom 4 had died. I
have not yet been able to identify these babies in the
records. Her husband, Ralph, was 64 and worked as an
onsetter in the coal mine. Their sons listed were
Matthew (28) who was a hewer, John (20) also a hewer and
Ralph (16) who also worked in the coal mine. Their
daughter Annie had married Frederick Wood and she and
her husband and their son , John (5 months) lived with
them. Another grandson, Ralph Robson (3) was in the
house, he was the son of their daughter Alice who had
married William Robson. Mary Ellen died
in the second quarter of 1915, she was 54 years old and
her death was registered int he Chester le St.
