Great Great Aunt of W.P.
'Bill' Richardson
Sarah was born about 1835, at Allenheads, Northumberland
the first child of Matthew Lee and his wife Mary Thirza
(nee Robson).
She was baptised at St Peter and Allenheads Chapel,
Allendale on the 25th August 1835.
Sarah was recorded on the 1841 census, living with her
family at CoalPit Houses, Allendale where her father
worked as a lead miner. She was six years old and her
brother Matthew was four.
At some time between 1841 and 1851, the family moved
from Allendale to Crook and Billy Row in Durham.
The 1851 census recorded the family at number 27 Peases
West Cottages in Crook. Sarah was 16. There was no
occupation listed for her but she would have helped her
Mam, Mary (43) , in the house. Her father, Matthew (46)
was still working as a miner, but now mined coal rather
than lead. Her younger brother Matthew was 13 and he too
worked in the pit. Sarah would also have helped to look
after the youngest child, John, who was 5.
In the second quarter of 1856, Sarah had a baby called
Isabella. I don't know who the father was as Isabella's
birth registration did not name him. In the first
quarter of 1859, Sarah was married to William Turner a
coal miner originally from Snape in Yorkshire.
The 1861 census recorded Sarah and her husband living in
Peases Cottages, just along the row from Sarah's parents
where her daughter Isabella (now 4) was counted. Sarah
and WIlliam had a baby called Mary Ellen who was just a
month old. They also had a boarder living with them.
By the time of the 1871 census, Sarah and her husband
were living in 'Moor Roddy Row', in Crook. William was
still working as a miner . The other occupants of the
house were Sarah's eldest daughter, Isabella (14), Mary
Ellen (10) and the new addition was Robert (7) who had
been named for his paternal grandfather.
Sarah died in the last quarter of 1875, she was 40 years
old and her death was registered in the Auckland
Registration District.
