Husband
of W.P. 'Bill' Richardson's Great Great
Aunt, Sarah Lee
William was born
in about 1835 and his parents were Robert Turner and his
wife Mary. He was baptised on 18th September 1836 at
Well, Yorkshire. The census of 1841
recorded William with his family living in Snape in
Yorkshire. He was 5 years old. His father, Robert, was
recorded as 40 and worked as a woolcomber, his mother,
Mary was also 40. William had brothers and sisters :
Matthew (21), Judith (17), Robert (14), George (12) and
Jane (2). By the time of the 1851 census,
William was 15 and working for his living. He lived in
Well, Yorkshire and worked for a farmer called Willaiam
James. Sometime after 1851, William moved
to County Durham and it was there that he married Sarah
Lee in 1859. Their marriage was registered in the
Auckland Registration District, William was 23 and Sarah
was 24. Sarah already had a child, Isabella, there was
no father named on Isabella's birth registration and I
have no idea if her father was William or not.
The 1861 census showed William and his family at Peases
Cottages, Crook and Billy Row, Co. Durham. William was
24 and he worked as a coal miner. His wife, Sarah, was
26. They had a daughter, Mary Ellen who was 1 month old.
Sarah's other daughter, Isabella, was in another
cottage, visiting with Granny and Granda Lee. There was
also a boarder , Thomas Turner (19), who I believe was
William's brother. Isabella Jackson (33) was listed in
the house as a domestic servant, presumably there to
help in the first few weeks after the birth of Mary
Ellen. William was recorded on the 1871
census as a 35 year old coal miner. He and his family
were living at Moor Roddy Row, Crook and Billy Row. His
wife, Sarah, was 36 and they had three children:
Isabella (14), Mary Ellen (10) and Robert (7).
William's wife, Sarah, died in 1875.
William had moved again by the time of the 1881 census
and was living in Long Row, Middlestone, Co. Durham. He
was 45 years old, a widower, and still worked as a coal
miner. Isabella had married in 1878 and lived elsewhere.
Mary Ellen was 20 and Robert was 17, he worked as a coal
miner like his Dad. William died in 1884,
he was 49 years old and his death was registered in the
Auckland Registration District. |
