Isabella was born on the 21st of June 1808 at Shawdon Woodhouse,
the fourth daughter of John Green (a Hind, or farm worker) and his wife Jane
(nee Young).
She was baptised on the 22nd June at the Parish Church at Whittingham.
At some time in the early 1830s she married George Turnbull, an agricultural
labourer.
Isabella was to have eight children.
The 1841 census showed her at Whittingham, aged 30, with her husband George who
was working as a Miller and their first three children: Eleanor who was 5, Jane
who was 3 and Jacob who was 2. Her father in law, Jacob Turnbull, also lived with
them.
In 1843 Isabella had another son, Robert, who died in 1845.
This pattern was repeated in 1847 when another baby boy was born
and was also named Robert. He died in January 1848.
By 1851, when the census was taken, Isabella was 40, the family had moved to
Guyzance and were living in Waterside House. Isabella had added another three
children to the family, Georgiana who was 10, John who was 5, and Isabella who
was 2. This was in addition to the older three. Eleanor was 14 and Jane was 13
and they both worked as farm labourers, Jacob was 12 and appears to have been
both a scholar and a farm labourer. Her father in law still lived with them and
even though he was 81 was still listed as a farm labourer.
The 1861 census recorded the family still in Shawdon, though now they were in a
cottage next to the Farm House. Isabella's second daughter, Jane, had married
the Farmer, George Bolam.
Isabella's husband, George Turnbull was the farm steward for his daughter
and son in law. Both Isabella and her husband were listed as being 51 years old.
The 1871 census recorded Isabella as being 61. Her husband was still working on
the farm and all of her children apart from John had left home. They had a
grandson living with them, George Turnbull aged 13.
Isabella died on 3rd October 1879, aged 69. She died at Amble and her husband
registered her death.
Isabella was buried on 5th October 1879 in Amble East Cemetery. |
