                        The fourth child of John Edward Gilliland 
                        and Ada Isabel Lee and their only son, John was born on 
                        the 22nd February 1907. His birth was registered in the 
                        Auckland Registration District of County Durham. 
                        The 1911 census recorded John with his 
                        family at Sunniside, Tow Law, Co. Durham. He was four 
                        years old. His Dad was 33 and worked in the pit as a 
                        hewer and his Mam was 33. John's sisters were Vera (9), 
                        Rena (8), Gladys (5) and Ada (5 months). 
                        John studied at Sunderland Technical 
                        College and qualified as a pharmacist. He worked for 
                        Stockton Co-operative Society for four years and then 
                        took up a position at  Winterton Hospital where he 
                        worked for 30 years. 
                         
                        At the age of 28, on the 29th August 1935, John married 
                        Winifred May Peart in the Methodist Church, Yarm Road, 
                        Stockton on Tees.  John was 28 and his occupation 
                        was recorded on the marriage certificate as a 'Dispenser 
                        at Mental Hospital', Winifred was 23 and worked as a 
                        Drapers Assistant. Their witnesses were W.R. Makin and 
                        Bessie Hutchinson. 
                         
                        John and Winifred had two sons, John and James. 
                         
                        John died on the 11th March 1962, he was 55 years old. 
                        His death was registered in Durham SE registration 
                        district. His cremation took place at Durham Crematorium 
                        and he is remembered in their Book of Remembrance.
