John Robinson
Richardson was born on 17th August 1882, the
8th child of Robert Richardson and his wife Margaret
(nee Pallister).
He was baptised on 10th September 1882 and his
baptism was recorded in the register for the Primitive
Methodist South Shields Circuit. The record showed that
his Dad was a miner and the family lived at Railway
Terrace, Usworth Colliery.
His middle name of Robinson was his paternal
grandmother's maiden name.
In 1885, his father Robert was killed in an explosion in
Usworth Colliery, John was just two years old.
In the 1891 census John was recorded as being a nine
year old scholar, living with his family at number 11,
Railway Terrace in Little Usworth.
In 1892, John's mother Margaret, having been a widow for
seven years, remarried. Her new husband was John
Patterson .
The 1901 census showed that Margaret and her husband had
set up home at number 11 Pensher View in Usworth.
John was also in the house, aged 18 and his occupation
was recorded as a 'Horse Keeper, Below Ground'
In the first quarter of 1905, John married Elizabeth Ann
Mullier, their marriage was registered in the Chester le
Street District.
The 1911 census recorded them living at 3 Elliott
Terrace, New Washington. John was 28 and his occupation
was listed as Colliery Horsekeeper, working for
Johnasson Gordon & Company. They were the owners of
Usworth Colliery. Elizabeth Ann was 27 and they
had a son called John who was just three months old.
The census stated that John and Elizabeth had been
married for six years and that they'd had 3 children, 2
of whom had died. The first of these two little ones was
Olive, who was born and died in the same quarter of 1906
and then in 1907 they had another little girl, who they
also called Olive. Sadly she too did not live long and
died within the same quarter of 1907.
John and Elizabeth had two
more children, Alan was born in 1915 and Elsie was born
in 1918, both births registered in Chester le Street.
John died on 3rd January 1949 at his home 38
Kitchener St., Sunderland. He was 66 years old and his
occupation was recorded as Horsekeeper below ground,
Colliery (retired). His death was registered by his son
in law Edward C Coomber.
