Great Uncle of
W.P. 'Bill' Richardson
David was born in the
first quarter of 1873 at Whitelee, Crook and Billy Row,
Co. Durham. He was named after his father who was a
miner and his mother was Elizabeth (nee McCollough).
He was baptised at Crook Parish Church on 6th April
1873, the record showed that his father worked as a
miner and the family lived at White Lea.
The 1881 census recorded him living with his family at
Grahamsley, Crook and Billy Row and he was listed as an
eight year old scholar.
In 1891 the census recorded the family at Gladstone
Terrace, Sunniside, Crook and Billy Row, David was
eighteen and working as a coal miner.
In 1895, at the age of 22, David Gilliand married Lily
Johnson, the 21 year old daughter of a picture frame
maker from Tow Law.
By the time of the 1901 census, David was 28, he was
working as a coal miner (Hewer). He and his wife Lily
were living at number 35 Gorches Row at Lintz Colliery
in Tanfield, Co. Durham.
They had three children, Minnie age 4 who had been born
in Sunniside, Willie (James William) age 2 who had been
born in Tow Law and Elizabeth Jane aged 2 months who had
been born in Burnopfield. They had two boarders,
also coal miners: William Gilliland (30), who was David's
brother and George Harkess (24).
The 1911 census recorded the family at Flag Row,
Sunniside, Co. Durham. David was 37 and was a coal miner
- hewer. His wife, Lily was 34. The family had grown
since the last census, in addition to the older ones
Minnie (14), James William (12) and Elizabeth (11), there
were two more children.
The new arrivals were Lily (6) and
Mabel (3). The census form was carefully completed by
David, he not only gave the birthplace for the children
but the actual address for each one ! He stated on the
form that he and Lily had been married for 15 years and
in that time they'd had 6 children one of whom, sadly,
had died. I have not yet found the records for this
baby.
David died on 28th January 1913, he was 40 years old.
Probate was granted to his widow, Lily, on 3rd April 1913, his effects amounted
to £128:10s. |
